Thursday Thoughts: A letter to myself 10 years ago

Hey Duckie,

It's me.  You.  Err..us.  The future you.  It is June 19, 2014 right now for me which means it's 2004 for you and you just graduated last week!  Congratulations!  I know you think that the hardest part is over, but trust me when I say it is going to get much MUCH harder.  Don't roll your eyes.

In 2014 you will be engaged to a hottie, with three gorgeous kids (you never were one to follow the "rules") and - get this - living on Guam.  Yep.  You'll be working as a legal secretary again (you've been in the field for about 7 years) but after being a stay-at-home mom for a year, you're really starting to hate your job.

Right now you've got big dreams of working in fashion and traveling the world.  Hold on to that dream and stay focused on it, because future you still wants that.  You need to start working for it now or it'll take you a long time to accomplish it - seriously.  Push yourself harder or you'll start having recurring dreams where you're back in school because you didn't give it your full effort.

Keep a positive attitude and strive to learn new things every day.  Take some classes - sewing, dance, cooking, painting, etc.  Focus more on making yourself happy and living for the future because you will live past 25 no matter how many times you say "live fast, die young".  Btw, the term for that in 2014 is YOLO (you only live once).

Don't over-pluck your eyebrows, throw out those jeans with the laces on them, and remember that not everyone who is nice to your face is your friend.

Most importantly, learn to enjoy every aspect of your life.  Don't freak out if things don't go according to plan (like mom) because no matter what, things will work themselves out in the end.  Promise.

♥ your 2014 self.

P.S.  You still look fucking AWESOME.

P.P.S.  Invest in designer items.

  1. First of all, i LOVE your blog's new look! Second, isn't it amazing how things can change in 10 years? There's no way I could've imagined my life now...even five years ago. But here we are. That advice about not over plucking your eyebrows? Priceless. #ididthat

  5. Love this! Funny but stern haha "Don't over-pluck your eyebrows." LOL

Also, crazy uncanny. My (much) younger sister lovingly reminded me last weekend that my prom & high school grad were 10 years ago. That actually made my jaw drop and inspired me to write something similar to this, though it's still in draft mode.
Sometimes I wish I could go back and help guide younger me but then I realize, it all turned out OK anyway :)

  7. Hey! I can't help it if I like to keep things on task and hate deviations. Don't get me wrong, I can and have had to adjust the schedule many times but if I put that much effort into something I expect it to be flawlessly executed. Don't you remember our color-coded wall calendar and how you and your siblings had to look at the schedule before you can go anywhere or have sleepovers? Yes you turned out just fine and I know there's still more exciting things ahead for you.
